Both of the below will work, though lots of folks I know run
the linksys LAN side to a switch(little 8 port). Can save you some
cash, especially if you know you are going to need more than 4 ports.
Buy a 1 WAN, 1 LAN linksys or dlink, buy a netgear 8 port switch, away
you go. OR....

(I've zero experience with smoothwall, though am about to go look, so....)

What I used to do was run a dual nic'd linux box, running ipchains, ipfw, portsentry, 
tripwire and snort. I'd set the portsentry to drop connections into
tcp wrappers if someone touched a port....changed that the first day, as
thats a really good way to get DoS'd. But something along those lines
would work for you as well, though again you will need a switch if you
have more than 1 host.
