can you provide more information? like what distrib you're using?

if you can't you should try to "rpm -e iptables" (and maye ip6tables or 
whatever depending on your distrib and configuration), then try "rpm -ivh 
your.new.iptables.rpm"

another possibility is to download the iptables source and recompile, it's 
available at http://netfilter.samba.org , you should still do "rpm -e 
iptables" before doing the make install step in the install instructions
