You have to run vnc through a set of ssh servers or VPN to encrypt it.

PcAnywhere know encrypts traffic and you can use various authentication
methods (LDAP and etc).

However I would suggest using single tunnel, not split tunnel, VPN since GUI
software has a habit of having serious vulnerabilities.  Thus far, I have
not heard of any major IPsec vulnerabilities.
