I would say pick up one of the following three languages: Perl, ADA, or Java. Perl is pretty standard and is in use is a lot of places ... ADA (http://www.adahome.com/) is a super safe language, or Java which is a combination of safty and popularity.
Some good books are Learning Java, Programming Perl, and The Perl CD Bookshelf.
