You'll want to make sure that the machine you compile on has an
operating system that is not newer (either the same patch level or
older) than the system you intend to run on.

Compiling on an older system and running on a newer one should always be
fine.  Going the other way is "often" fine as well, but there's no real
guarantee.

The model of CPU and brand of motherboard and box shouldn't have much to
do with this.  (You'd have to be doing something pretty strange to hurt
yourself there.)

Pointing in the right direction here might include suggesting that you
stick to the ssh that's built into the system.  It works well and
doesn't involve compiling anything.
