I'm not on AOL now, but I believe one of the following keywords: usenet, newsgroup, 
newsgroups will lead into a crude newsgroup reader on the AOL software.

Try entering "news:alt.language.latin" without the quotes into your
AOL browser and see what happens.

If you don't get, for instance, a listing of messages to read, and
additional browser features to facilitate posting of messages, then
the browser is NOT equipped to handle USENET newsgroups, and you will
have to go to (and possibly register for an account at) www.deja.com
or www.remarq.com or some other site that does facilitate reading and
posting USENET messages.

USENET has, alas, been sadly forgotten by the Net-access business
in the last ten or so years...they seemed to think chat rooms made it
obsolete, or some such "Choonk"...
