No, you cannot directly register with the InterNIC, you have to go
through one of the authorized registrars. Network Solutions
(http://www.networksolutions.com) is one, but there are a slew of
them out there now. If this is what you meant by registration
services, then yes, you'll have to deal with at least one of them.
Most of the ones I've seen, the registration is fairly painless: you
enter the desired domain name, and if available, you'll be taken to
another page where you are asked to fill in some more pertinent info,
mainly administrative and billing contacts.
The one requirement that always got people in the past is the name of
the nameservers, which means most often you have to have an ISP lined
up already to provide the nameserver service. The field has gotten so
competitive now that almost all registrars will offer to let you park
your domain on their system for free (ie. they provide the needed
nameservers that are required).
A good resource to research the domain names is Whois.net
(http://whois.net), whose search is head and shoulder above all else
that I'm aware of. For example, you can enter "tape" and the search
will return all domain names that has "tape" in the name (ducttape,
tapestry, videotape, etc.)

the ICANN site:

or from the InterNIC site:

Alas, the only registrar I've dealt with is Network Solutions. And
although other people have had horrible experience with NetSol, my
own experience has been rather good. All registrations were handled
promptly (I've registered 4 domains), and all requested changes taken
care of via their automated system w/o any problem. Most importantly,
they didn't release my domains to be sold again (as was the case
recently with another registrar, whose name escapes me at the
moment).
Hope this helps.
