Hi Paul, Ping...

We've gone some way down the road to making the Mailet API free from the
hidden dependance on avalon.
I've done some work towards providing service access through JNDI, though
this is not comitted, and there is no explicit dependance.

Those mailets are already not portable under the Mailet API, however there
is no other way to write them until the JNDI stuff is released.

I'd support, but have little effort to spare on, anything that reduced our
dependance on Avalon for reasons we don't really need to revisit.

The timetable is that we're waiting on Noel to commit a merged version of 2
and 3 to MAIN so that we can take that forwards as v3.
Though, no disrespect to Noel, this is beginning to drag out a bit and
perhaps he's too busy elsewhere.
