Sadly the PDF-Xchange product is now only available free on a trial
basis, and even then it inserts annoying Buy-Me buttons on the
document thereby rendering it totally useless you buy it.
I have come across a neat free bookmarking service from an Icelandic
company at http://www.spurl.net/. You can also find something not dissimilar at http://www.furl.net/index.jsp .

Thanks, Paul. It might be complicated to install in comparison,
but it
appears to be superbly documented - in .PDF format of course.
Adobe
did a brilliant job of propagating .PDF as a standard with their
dissemination of free Acrobat Reader. However, the resultant
satisfaction tended to be somewhat blunted for your casual PC user
on
discovering the price of the software they were selling to
make .PDFs.

Gervas - can I follow up?
For those of you that are willing to get your hands dirty, there
is a
free software solution to the PDF printer. Its probably more hassle
than PDF-Xchange Lite, but once its working its great.

It uses Ghostscript and RedMon.

We all know that computers can be immensely useful, particularly

However,
occasionally one comes across useful free utilities that not only
calm
one's circulatory system, but actually make life easier in a
constructive and productive fashion. I would just like to share
a
couple of examples with you:
[1] PDF-Xchange Lite. This is a wonderful product that installs
itself as a printer driver and allows you to generate a PDF
version
of
any document that you have up on the screen. By "document" I am
including a whole host of formats including .XLS. You can
download
this at:
http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/PDF-XChange-Lite/3000-6675_2-

[2] Copernic Desktop Search. I commented some time ago on
desktop
search engines when they were a hot topic. I tried Google's -
not a
bad product. However I have found that Copernic's is a real
whizzo.
For instance it comfortably outperforms Thunderbird's in-built
search
function with the additional advantage of not being restricted
to one
app or format. The UI is also pleasing. You can download this
at:
http://www.copernic.com/en/products/desktop-search/index.html
No doubt many of you know of other useful examples. I will
happily
run this thead as a side thread if you wish to contribute. The
only
criteria are that the utilities be quick, simple and easy to
install
and use, that they be useful and that they be free. If this gets
popular enough I will found a Group for the theme. So send in
your
contributions [no, I am not paid money by the producers of any of
these products].
