I would offer that calling that SOI implies that it is still service-oriented 
when you're trying to make the point that it is not.

Using web services instead of say, proprietary adapters, doesn't make things 
SO, correct?

I agree wholeheartedly that to be doing SOA one must be defining or modifying 
an architecture. Where we may disagree is at what level that architecture must 
be to be considered as following the SOA style.
