Try "telnet hostname 25"
to connect to the SMTP server and then
enter the SMTP commands / data by hand.
Check if the mail is sent. This will help
identify if the problem is with the server
(in case you haven't checked already) or
with your program.
I think the sun.net.* classes have some support
for SMTP.
