I wouldn't necessarily call it an applet, but it is a downloadable like most
other JAVA classes, and becomes a component of your Applet. In the middle
tier that isn't much of a hit, since the JVM will cache the classes anyways.
At least with Jserv+Apache I've noted it hasn't made much of a difference on
my Intranet sites.
Not true on the 8.1.5 part. You can download the supported 8.1.6 drivers
that work with jdk1.2 and Oracle 8.1.5. The 8.1.5 drivers work with jdk1.2,
but probably have "issues". Even using the "thick" drivers to attach to the
rdbms on the same box is OK, as long as you can support multiple
$ORACLE_HOME paths ... so NT may have issues there.
