The "thick" or OCI drivers are recommended by Oracle for server-server type
communication, e.g. your web or application server to your database.  Thin
drivers are targeted at C/S type connections, and generally will have
problems with your fire-wall, unless it is "Oracle aware" or can be
configured for the port ranges Oracle uses.

You can use the thin driver anywhere, but Oracle's recommendation has always
been as described above.
