These sound like more realistic numbers. I haven't optimized WebMacro yet,
so as long as it's in the right ballpark I'm happy. I'd guess FM hasn't
been optimized a lot yet, and that both could be sped up considerably
I'd guess the difference is partly because FreeMarker can cut a few
corners--you have to hardcode adapters for every bit of data you feed
into its back end, but then it can optimize access to those adapters.
Under WebMacro you drop ordinary Java objects into a hashtable, without
having to define any adapters. That's a major convenience for the
developer, I think, but it does come with a small price tag.
Still, I'd bet that both WM and FM can be sped up consdierably from
their present levels, so this is all fairly moot right now, so long
as they're within an order of magnitude of one another.
