I absolutely agree with you guys!! Active and advanced users like you will
obviously feel frustrated. But most users don't care to read the policies
when they join the user groups. And more importantly most users "do not
realize" that the questions they put through are not meant to be asked here.
The point I was trying to make was that the "tone" of emails discouraging
users from sending mails doesn't sound good. Some comments sound like
admonishment rather than discouragement. And these comments invite
unnecessary mails like the one that came as a reply to Srini's.
Why am I concerned? I am new to the group and servlets, and however careful
I may be, I may stumble across questions that I do not realize are off
topic, basic or even "stupid". And I wouldn't feel comfortable seeing
replies that sound like "get the hell outta here".

Actually, someone does own this list. That someone is Sun. And they
have set policies for this list, which include restricting off-topic
posts and suggesting people check other resources (like FAQs and the
list archives) before posting to the list.

Please, don't bring up red herrings, this is not about "rights". It's
about what's reasonable and what's important for keeping the list a
valuable resource.
Of course, the irony here is you're telling people not to post while
saying that people can't tell people not to post.

True, you can't enfore it, but you can encourage it.

Depends what you mean by "put up with". There will always be some
amount of off-topic/too basic questions, but there are alternatives
besides passively accepting it -- like actively trying to discourage
it (which some are doing) and leaving the list (as others are doing).
