I second (third?) Milt's comment.
One way to avoid "RTFM" type answers is to give a short history
of whatever research you did to try to answer the question on your
own. Not only does that reassure people on the list that you made
some effort, it also helps readers to understand the context of
your question and increases the chances of getting a relevant
answer. I (try) to do that myself, and I've found that about half
the time the act of writing a summary of the problem clarifies it
sufficiently to make the answer obvious...
