Well, what may be trivial to you and me may not be so simple
to the beginning servlet/Java coder. Don't forget your
roots - we were there one time, too. I appreciate what you
are saying about helping oneself before asking others for
help. Some responses I've seen, however, remind me of the
Old Days of the Net Underground back in the 80's when the
Elite snubbed their noses at newbies (or anyone connecting
at less than 9600 baud, for that matter) and summarily
terminated the connection or flamed them mercilessly.
My point is that while I agree in principle with the "help
yourself before asking others for help," some of the
responses to these persons could be softened a bit. Also,
taken the (obvious) multinational nature of this list,
politeness is a relative thing, so why not err on the side
of niceness?
After all, being nice (a) does not mean capitulating on
principle and (b) nourishes your own soul.

It is not the people on the list who give the harsh replies
that are
rude. It is in fact very rude to ask a question without
attempting to
solve your own problem. As a rule before asking a question
one is
supposed to search the archive or buy a book (well, if you
go to the
bookstore you can read the book for free, even).
Failure to search the archive, ask a very basic question, or
generally
have the list members spoon feed information is the utlimate
in
rudeness. If you search the archive you will find many who
just answer
questions and never ask. . . Why? Because we have learned
how to
search the archive and solve our problems.
I have found that to do this job one needs a certain level
of
analytical/critical thinking, creativity, PERSERVERENCE, and
patience.
I don't know about the others, however, I RESENT having to
spoon feed
others information. It has been said previously if someone
hasn't
earnestly tried to solve their problem then they should not
be asking
the list. DON'T BE LAZY.
