For most components, I'd tend to agree that your initial thinking was the "right" thinking, but looking at the distros and the communities, automake seems to have a compatibility model onto itself (if it indeed has a model). I'm fine with this. Others may differ. I just want to be clear that I view this as an automake specific decision and not a precedent to be followed. - cheers, - jek3
