Actually, I notice other apps populate the application-registry
directory.

bash-3.2$ pwd
/usr/share/application-registry
bash-3.2$ ls
gimp.applications            java-web-start.applications
gnome-vfs.applications       meld.applications
java-archive.applications    staroffice.applications

meld.applications has:

        mime_types=x-directory/normal

Is there any reason I shouldn't just keep it?
