SAMBA and mapping drive letters is done via netbios over TCP/IP or IPX. The
windows name for a machine is it's netbios name.
What are you trying to accomplish as the end product? Pinging by IP name
requires manual entries into DNS. Your ISP won't do it for you on their end
unless you pay them for that service of course. When you set up DNS inside
STN, there is a table that you can create for internal use only. That table
doesn't help anyone outside your internal network to get to your internal
machines.

Ummm ... but my original question was about "PING" not working and
therefore DNS name resolution - nothing to do with browsing. All of
the machines can see each other byy windows names - its TCP/IP name
resolution that I have the problem with.
Sorry, I may have confused the situation by mentioning SAMBA but that
was more an indication that I was adding to the networks complexity.
