I want to be able to add machines to the network without having to
worry about assigning IP addresses and also minimize the setup process
per machine.

BUT - I want to be able to access machines by name (TELNET, PING, etc)
for TCP/IP services.

This is what I was trying to discover :-)

Yes, I know - its on the DNS "tab" --- but it only takes static IP
addresses.

Personaly, I dont care about that - this is for internal services
only.

It strikes me that as it stands DHCP+DNS is OK as long as you dont
want to access internal machines by name (TCP only).

I could "hack" the DHCP file to add "Fixed" IP/NODE address mappings
(DHCP nodes with this implemented would always get the same IP
address) but that make it difficult if I have to change a NIC card,
and I still have the same problem of having to edit/recreate something
to add a new machine.

There are supposed to be various "klunky" ways of transfering the DHCP
names and IP addresses into the DNS server --- but I suspect that may
be difficult with STN. Has anyone tried this ??

Hmmmm ... I think I will abandon DHCP and set up the DNS table on the
STN box and then do away with the HOSTS files on each workstation.
This should mean that (apart from setting up the new machine) I have
only one place to add the name/IP address -- but it will mean
rebooting STN to activate the change so I may have to break service or
delay it till lunchtime/evening.

Bob
