Let's say that STN is John's product and he sells it the way it is (which most agree 
is pretty great for what it does and what it costs).

But being Linux based, can others build on what John has developed?  Can others add 
features and either provide them for free or charge a small stipend for the "patch" or 
 the "additional code"?

Would John really care? (Would you?)

You would think that this would not only strengthen the product, bring it current with 
the changes in technology (VPN, Ipsec, etc.) but also provide more sales to John with 
the base product.  Those that need simple firewall protected routing, here it is.  And 
those that connect through VPN or live with ICQ can get the code to make it work for 
them.  I would think that this business moves too fast for just one person to keep it 
going.all the time.  And it would
be a shame to let STN get lost in history.

Anyone want to buy an EGA Monitor?
