Here's what I would do:
First connect, your win98 box to the cable modem directly and see how
long it stays on. Like test it for a full day to make sure that it's
stable (then, I'd run winipcfg, or ipconfig or get all the info
regarding the cable modem setup info, ip, dns servers, gateway, etc)
Then I'd do the same thing with one of the WinME boxes and keep it up
for about a day. See if it stays on.
Then, I'd rebuild the STN diskette from a newly formatted one (STN
leaves files on it when you rebuild over it - so reformat it first). I
once had a corrupted file on the STN diskette for the dhcp table. When
I rebuilt it on a new diskette it rebuilt the dhcp table and it all
worked fine again.
Then, I'd really watch the order when you bring on the PC's. I just
suspect that the WinME boxes may be a problem. It would help, in my
mind, if you had two Win98 boxes (I'm superstitious about WinMe).
I would then call a friend and have him ping the outbound WAN IP of the
STN box after it is up and get's and IP address from the provider. Then
bring up one PC and ask the friend to ping the STN IP address again.
Then bring up the second box and when you go down try and ping the STN
IP again. If your friend can't ping the STN IP address after you go
down then you know the problem is either the cable modem (could be), the
cable modem phone line (I doubt), external NIC on the STN box (could be)
or cable between the NIC and Modem (I doubt). Because you can ping all
the PC's and STN on the internal LAN, then internal NIC on STN is
working and STN itself is working.
The direct connection, as noted above, can rule out the modem. If it
runs for a day with each PC independently (Win98 the WinMe) it says to
me that the cable modem is good and you should be looking at the STN
external NIC or again, maybe you just have a corrupted STN diskette.
If it isn't the STN diskette, I'd put my money on the WinMe boxes as
trouble, unless you can use two Win98 boxes and verify the problem is
the same.
One last point, you know that unless you have the correct license keyed
into your STN setup - you go down in about 1/2 hour. Maybe your STN
disk corrupted and it now thinks it is in demo mode? Maybe you already
built a new STN diskette but didn't key in the license number?
Good Luck. And do let us all know what the problem is after you
discover it. Most people after solving things don't report back and we
all lose out from the experience and solution.
