Linux(like Windows) needs to be able to write temporary files to it's boot
device. When you boot from a floppy, that is the boot device hence the
kernal panic if you write protect the floppy or remove it while STN is
running. STN does utilize a RAM disk, but it's boot device is the floppy.
DHCP servers write their database to the boot device so that it knows what
IP addresses are given out when rebooted. If it wrote the database to the
RAM disk and you rebooted the STN or kicked the cord out of that computer?
If it wasn't written in a database file somewhere, STN would start issuing
IP addresses already in use.
STN has so few services on it, that even if someone managed to get into it
there isn't much you can do with it. The biggest thing is a)disable or make
the web admin interface internal only or if you have to have external web
admin b)put a strong password on it and change it often.
The other excellent method of protecting that floppy is to replace it
weekly. The only downside is the dhcp database. But if you shut down all
client computers, change the floppy on STN and then restart all computers,
then they will get new IP addresses from the DHCP server and all will be
well with the world.

Subject: [STN] Cant write protect floppy!
I have a strange problem. I have read more than once that it should be
possible to write protect the floppy (to prevent "intruders" from changing
the configuration files etc) but when I try this STN do not boot properly
claiming that there is no configuration files!
If I boot without write protect and then take out the diskette, protect it
and set it back STN will fail later (kernel panic, illegal sector or
something like that).
I have also noticed that STN seem to access the floppy (I do not know if it
is read or write) every time a DHCP request is received from my internal
network - this is also a surprise since I thought STN run only versus
RAM-disk once it had booted.
Any sugestions?
Regards
Magnus
