Does my theory of hitting the ball high and towards the heel, ie. at or very near the hosel, hold any water?
Toward the heel certainly makes sense. I'm not sure high makes it that much worse -- except for the no-hosel Callways, where you might actually hit the ball with the shaft. Except for that, I suspect low on the heel might be more damaging than high, it will put more bending force on the shaft at the top of the hosel.
