My oldest son once built a new set of irons for his younger brother. We didn't
want to keep
rebuilding each year as he only played 6X's a year so I said just build his
last set to get him
through high school, knowing he was going to be 6 feet tall and strong. I said
make them longer and
stiff. We had reused his GS Tour Cavity heads again, what he had since age 11.
 I was hoping this
rebuild would get him through high school.

The next week I had to play golf and grabbed my youngest son set of irons and
wedges since they had
new grips. I loved them and never gave them back. Instead I ordered KZG
Forged Cavity Backs and
Forged Wedges and told my oldest son to build his younger brother a forged set.

The fitting was totally wrong for me but played significantly better. Go
figure. I eventually cut
them down a 1/4 of an inch and just sold them after 8 years of use. My new set
this spring were new
in-the-box Mizuno Forged MX-23 which I bought for a song at a town auction and
then I reamed the
hosels to accept parallel tipped steel shafts and finished it off Balanced and
Blueprinted with
Pro-Soft inserts. Reused the wrong fitting parameters which I stumbled on
years earlier and I
couldn't be happier.

Other times with my oldest son (who played most days during the summer), I
would build so he could
grow into a club, like taking his driver from R to X flex (Harrison UL Pro 2.5
X flex) at age 15.
The same day he was killing the ball. He never had to grow into it, it was
better within the first
few minutes. He made it work. He eventually got his handicap below scratch to
the + level and shot
a course record '64' to a club 55-years old.

To quote Robert: getting pretty good results from stuff that isn't supposed to
work! I found this
too with my own clubfitting and building.

Knowing this sometimes we experiment with changes against our own personal
bias. We did this on a
putter which turned out to be his favorite.

Thanks, Harry

pretty good results from
stuff that isn't supposed to work ! But I don't know if a 48" driver will fit
in my SUV???
LOL!!!!!
