We'll agree that the preferred shot is 'normal' ball position for a given
yardage (whatever that is based on your swing and equipment - normal for me
is about at my belt buckle, maybe 1" forward of that, tops). I'll debunk
the idea that it's easy to fan open a 9i to hit a 'flop' vs. playing a LW
back in your stance to produce the same trajectory (and MORE spin) all day -
the simple fact is that the LW played back is 100x easier to hit, and there
is a waaaay bigger margin for error. That in itself makes it a no-brainer
to have (and learn to use) the LW. Folks who don't buy into that have their
heads in the sand.
We agree on that. A couple of your points I'd like to emphasize from my angle:
(1) Except where sole bounce or shot curvature is a significant part
of the shot, I would always rather play the clubface square. Just
easier for me to hit.
(2) You MUST do the practice ("learn to use"). The LW is not
inherently easy to use. The Werner & Greig study tells us why. Simply
going to the course and expecting the LW to work for you without
explicit practice does not work.
Of course, there are shots (and golf courses like Cedarbrook in
Belle Vernon, PA where I played this w/e) where it's not possible to
consistently spin the ball
I know Cedarbrook well. Why do you say it's not possible to spin the
ball there?
Cheers!
