Maybe I'm 'out there', but last I checked it's much easier to position the ball back in your stance and hit it lower with a specific club rather than putting it up in your stance and fan it open, while fighting the bounce and the fact that you fundamentally alter your swing just to get good contact. Sure I can do 'that' with a 9i or hell, a 3i just to humor someone, but if I'm trying to post a score I'll always choose more loft and play it back if there's a need to do so, and effectively NEVER try the opposite unless there is no alternative.

Well, I went almost two rounds without touching the LW. (That's not atypical.) Then I used it twice at the end of today's round: (#17) Flew the green into fairly heavy rough. The green runs away, and I short-sided myself. About 10ft to carry the rough, a foot or two of fairway cut, then 10ft downhill to the hole -- and the green continues downhill for about 40ft after that. Hit a soft, high lob that landed in the fringe (fairway cut), and dribbled down to and past the hole. Stopped with an 8ft uphill putt. No other shot could have left me as close. (#18) Put it into the front bunker. The sand is hard today, and I'm almost to the lip. Slightly uphill lie, but not very. There is about 12ft of rough before I reach the green, and again I short-sided myself. I need loft, and I need no bounce, in order to pop the ball up and get some spin, clear the lip, and not crack the ball over the green into the back bunker (or the parking lot). The SW does not do the job; open enough to get the loft, and have too much bounce -- hell, it has too much bounce for this shot when square. A square LW popped it onto the green with enough spin to stay fairly close to the hole. So sometimes it really IS the only club that will get the job done. Cheers!
