Can't help with this one - I rarely use GPRS.

If you are using SHR these are only activated on demand. If you aren't using 
them they won't be taking power. I'm surprised you can empty the battery that 
quickly, but if you are constantly transferring data over GPRS and have the 
backlight on all the time you will be using a lot of power. The backlight at 
100% uses as much power as the rest of the phone when not transferring data, 
so turning the backlight down can help battery life a lot. I haven't looked at 
how much the phone module uses for GPRS, or how it varies with signal 
strength.

You could do this with a very simple ~/.xsession I think. Try:

midori

It works on debian, but doesn't fill the screen. You might be able to sort 
that with come options, or you might need a simple window manager like 
matchbox for that.
