Hi,
I'm trying to turn a couple of Neo Freerunners into dummy clients for
one specific application. All i do is boot SHR, start a webbrowser and
display a small web application. During testing i ran into a couple of
issues which i hope you can help me with.
- Every now and then GPRS seems to disconnect, i don't think this is
because of some idle time, because i ping the server regularly. What is '
I don't know - my gprs connections stays up for days and weeks. They
only stop when I stop them or boot the phone. Check if your
service provider has some sort of silly timeout. Maybe another gsm
provider is better.
There is always the option of making a script that notices the
broken connection, and then restarts it.
- power usage of the devices seems to be extreme. I think the battery
drains in an hour or so. What can i do to minimize the power usage? I
1. The backlight must time out and shut itself out after a short
period of inaction. Light alone will drain the battery that quick.
2. The phone should also suspend when unused. That way, the battery can
last more than a day. Gprs connections seems to have no problem with
this.
need almost nothing of it's functionality, so i guess i should disable
things as GPS, bluetooth, etc..
Is it sufficient to remove the init files of these services from startup
or should i explicitly disable these components?
The phone don't turn them on when not in use. No problem there. But you
need suspending and you need the display to turn off if you want
any kind of battery time.
I guess having the phones connected to usb power all the time
isn't feasible. Do people use them for days, or are they used
briefly and returned? If so, they could be charging up while
waiting to get used again.
No need for a pc to charge them, a powered usb hub works
as a charging station.
- Is it possible to skip Enlightment/Illume and run Midori straight on
the X server?
Sure - and it'll start up faster that way too.
The file /etc/X11/Xsession.d/90xXWindowManager is the one that starts
the window manager. You can change it to start midori instead.
Or, if you don't want to destroy a distribution file, just
chmod oug-x /etc/X11/Xsession.d/90xXWindowManager
so it is no longer executable. Then add
your own file 90xMidori that runs midori
with whatever parameters you want.
The first 2 questions are obviously the most important and the issue
with GPRS is a showstopper at the moment.
I suspect the phone company here. Check with them, or try another.
