This change is made by fsotdld, it looks up your gsm provider and
converts it to a timezone and updates /etc/timezone and
/etc/localtime. Check /var/log/fsotdld.log, maybe the data for your
provider are not correct in the system tables. Finally you can disable
things in /etc/freesnartphone/conf/openmoko_gta/fsodtld.conf.

You mean a very old phone? Record one to a wav file. I had one with my
old SE P800, but today I prefer sound snippets from my music files as
ringtone.
