Aah, looking at /var/log/fsotdld.log, there are plenty of entries 
along the lines of:

[WARN] SyncTimeService <2>: Can't remove /etc/localtime: Stale NFS 
file handle

So I expect it's a minor ext2 corruption. I'll fsck it soon, which 
I'm sure will fix things.

Maybe I should get with the times. Perhaps I'll convert one of the 
nice tracks from themodarchive.org to wav as a ringtone. I still 
feel like a traditional phone ring would be a reasonable default 
though.
