Well, the VGA16 Xserver works, so it's not an OS or configuration
problem...

Maybe you have a hardware incompatibility problem.  The Abit board does
have some kind of RAM caching system which I haven't seen before.

I too have had trouble with S3 Virge-based boards.  They seem to be far
less stable than, for example, the Matrox Millenium boards.

I would upgrade to the latest version of XF86 and see if this fixes the
problem.  If not, borrow another video card from someone else (preferably
one which also uses XF86_SVGA) and see if this works.  If it does, then
one would have to infer hardware incompatibility, at least as far as X is
concerned.
