The exact same thing happened to when when I was setting up RedHat 5.1. I
could make it through xf86setup or Xconfigurator, but X would freeze every
single time I tried to start it.
In my case, it turned out to be the mouse. As it turns out, none of
Xconfigurators choices worked -- yet in xf86setup, there was an additional
choice for Microsoft Intellipoint, and that worked.
I think I saw in one of your later posts you were running Redhat 5.2, in
which case, run the utility mousecfg, which has a much improved range of
choices. It turns out RH 5.2 still does not have my mouse listed, but it
does autodetect it at the beginning as a Logitech Firstmouse. I can boot X,
but this doesn't all me to use my middle mouse button. Intellipoint still
does the trick. Anyway, this is a way of saying I don't think RedHat's mouse
support is quite worked out yet, so its probably worth it to investigate
this further.
