Try 'fsck /dev/hda1'
The filesystem _needs_ to be read-only, so don't even try to edit or
change that. Also, don't worry about the 'su root' problem, it's not a
problem. You're root at this point ( you were asked for, and you provided
the root password to get to the shell).
