Well, I for some reason my mp3 player was skipping even though it was
the only app running. So I ran top and noticed X was using 40 PERCENT of
my cpu. So I *was* going to log out of X and switch to runlevel 3 and
then back to 5. But after I exitted, my computer reset. I don't mean a
responsible reset with umount's and running all the K* thing in rc5.d.
it just RESET. now when I boot I am launched into a root shell and
/etc/fstab is GONE. I do have a backup copy (fstab~). I ran fsck and
there were a bunch of problems I fixed, and mount says my partition is
in rw mode, but when I try to copy fstab~ to fstab I can't. (the
message is that the partition is read-only.) I tried the windows ext2
mount utility, but it's ro. I also tried typing linux 1 at the lilo
prompt and that didn't help. What do I do? Please help. The last time I
touched fstab was weeks ago. I don't understand.
