If all else fails, there's always tomsrtbt (http://www.toms.net/rb/). But
one thing to keep in mind in the future is that the reason X may have been
eating so much CPU is a screensaver. I would just use blank screen as my
screensaver or disable it completely, since most newer monitors are pretty
much immune to burnout. You can also try running it as a very low priority
process. Also, how did you exit from X? I've never used xdm, but it seems
the worst that should happen when you exit from X is a normal shutdown
followed perhaps by a reboot.
