hey taral,
i'm not sure what mr. winn is talking about. i've not seen any cases
where
it would be more cost effective to go out and buy a whole new case just
for the power supply.
i recently bought an ATX 250w PS from MicroChip Computers. they are a
decent
little hardware reseller here in town, with a slightly better reputation
than
ChipSmart but they are still pretty shady. i've heard the owner say
things like
"well, that's if you want the name-brand crap" and i am a firm believer
in
"you get what you pay for", but <shrug> whatever.
the PS was like $30-something, not bad. i'm buying another one today
actually,
for a different box.
hey, while we are on the subject:
last night i came into my room and discovered that my win98 box was
dead.
power switch has no effect, and the power supply was still warm to the
touch, i
suspect that since that thing has been running for at least a year
straight
or so the power supply fan may have stopped and allowed the power supply
to
simply heat up until it killed itself. could such a process damage
other
components using the power supply? is it a good probability that my box
is totally hosed now? i'd like to think some clever engineers have been
designing safer power supplies with safekill switches or what not to
prevent
the device from burning everything it can.
what do you guys think? step 1 is to get a new power supply and try,
but
i just want to hear what you guys predict from something like this.
