I don't think having technical accuracy is important at all. A
movie can have them and be good or it could not have them and be good.
As reference, consider gongfu movies. (which I assume most of us all
would like)

So, let's say you go pick up a Jet Li movie. You can watch
something like Once Upon a Time in China (Huang Fei-Hong) or Fist of
Legend (Jingwu Yingxiong). (I mention these two because I think they
are extremely good well-known examples of both types of action movie)
The former is a period piece containing exaggerated action sequences
and completely impossible fighting techniques with wires galore - no
basis in reality. On the other hand, Fist of Legend (a remake of a
Bruce Lee movie whose name I forget) features much more realistic
modern fight scenes with no wires. (or almost none)

Both are amazing, absolutely breathtaking movies. One is mostly
based in reality, the other isn't. Does the fact that it is more
realistic make Fist of Legend a better movie? Of course not. You
might like one more than the other, but it shouldn't be because of the
realism, or lack thereof. Of course, one can overdo wires to the
point of stupidity just as one can overdo reality to the point of
boredom - it's easy to make a bad movie of either variety. But both
can be extremely entertaining.

In the same way, I don't think technical accuracy is a necessity for
a good hacker movie. (or a tech movie in general) You can try to do a
mostly realistic movie such as Sneakers and have the end result be
interesting. On the other hand, you can have a movie like Hackers in
which the tech is all wrong - and you can still come up with a very
entertaining movie.

I do suggest you watch Hackers - especially with an open mind. I
really think it does a good job of portraying the hacker mentality and
portraying the world from the perspective of the hacker. I don't
claim it is accurate in any technical details and it certainly has
been hollywood'ized. (as I think was the crux of Justin's comments)
It is still quite entertaining, but you'll miss that if you are too
busy worrying about why every computer has 50 point fonts and displays
5 characters per screen. :)
