Be more careful :)

Make sure that the values you use are actually within the capability
of your monitor.  It was many years ago, but I did actually break a
17" monitor while setting up Xfree86.

Most modern monitors will just shut off rather than letting themselves
be pushed too far, but it's not a good risk to take.

Of course, decent new 17" monitors can now be had for < $100.  The one
I ruined costed much more than that, at a time when money was
particularly tight :\
