[ I'm answering the rhetorical question, not the specific question `what happened THIS time' ... ] Occasionally mails get `stuck' in the mqueue and never get shipped out until the system is rebooted, or perhaps until sendmail is upgraded. Sometimes people restore backups, including the mail queue, and stuff goes out.
