Hi Everyone,

Something a little different for the list on a Tuesday morning when it appears
the financial world is in meltdown: some good news, a thank you, and a bit pat
on the back.

Two Sundays ago, I was lucky enough to be invited to attend and present at
Influence Forum 08, run by Phil Sim and his team from Media Connect. Phil was
gracious enough to make a few of spots at their Demo event available to Silicon
Beach readers, and along with Sunit from Technovus (who posted last week), and
Robert from WhoCanDo.com.au, I got a chance to present our new, soon to launch
startup, Hiive Systems, to an assembled audience of 50+ journalists and tech
luminaries.

Following the official stuff, there was a great dinner and excellent networking
and relationship building that went well into Monday morning (apologies to
other guests trying to sleep at the Crowne Plaza in the Hunter Valley). The
next day I was able to relax a little more and participate, which was made more
interesting with the Twitter back-channel.

In terms of outcomes, we're still pre-launch, so we weren't looking for
immediate press, but I've come away from the event with about 3x more followers
on Twitter<http://www.twitter.com/geoffmcqueen>, not to mention a bunch of
traditional press contacts and a few prospective customers too. My experiences
are covered in a little more detail in a blog post on the
event<http://www.hiivesystems.com/blog/2008/09/hiive-influence-forum-08/> for
anyone who's interested.

The big thankyou is for Phil is choosing to make spaces available at late
notice to the people on this list hungry to get the word out about their
businesses. It was also great to have a forum that puts a range of parties
interested in the tech space together in such a facilitated way: from my time
in the other 'Silicon' location, I felt that it was the face to face contact
(as described really well by Paul
Wolff<http://groups.google.com/group/silicon-beach-australia/msg/5bfa7f92780d631c>
back in August) that made the difference and drove the sector forward.

So, in summary, big thanks and appreciation to Phil to giving our community a
chance to get our names out there - much appreciated!

Geoff
