One thing I will note, is that we were hardly knocked backwards from
people putting their hand-up to participate. It somewhat reinforces my
perception that Australian start-ups are really, really poor at
marketing themselves.

All PR and marketing is iterative. You build relationships, plant
seeds, keep working it and eventually you get a result. So take every
opportunity you can get to promote yourself, mix with the press,
speak, etc. Geoff for instance grabbed the chance even though he is
pre-launch and as long as he keeps stoking those relationships he's
built (which with Twitter, etc is so much easier to do than the old
days) he'll stand a far better chance of getting some good publicity
when he's ready to talk than simply spamming a bunch of journalists
who don't know you from a bar of soap with a press release  at time of
launch.
