Local domains are definitely important if you are worried about SEO.The
rules on .au domains are a lot looser nowadays as well, which makes things
easier.

.com is good for showing that you are playing on the world stage :)

Domains are so cheap now that I always (if I can) register both the .com and
.com.au of
whatever I am doing.
