Is it a global or US-focused idea you have? If so definitely .com over .net. .Net's are valued at ~5% of the .com equivalent (so obviously not many .com's left). Worthwhile making offers though... Hyphens are OK, from an SEO perspective they work well but users don't like them (seen as spammy). If you are after .com.au's then you should be able to hand register decent ones (crazydomains is pretty cheap) or if you are after premium generics then you can make an offer to the owners. My company sells and also leases premium generic .com.au's.
