I don't get the domain discussion. Even if you launched locally with .com,
it's not that big a deal keeping it local. (I wouldn't even bother with
.com.au tbh)
Surely it's about strategy - local v global?

For what it's worth, I'm in the 'think global, act local' camp. Launch your
first/beta version and focus efforts on the local. Find out what works, what
doesn't, build upon it rinse, repeat.

Have a look at Friendorse.com for an example. They started off with a focus
on Hornsby, tweaked things along the way, and (from what I can tell) cover
greater Sydney now.
