Thanks Alistair, Alex and Hugh, I agree with both Alistair and Hugh! That is, I'm well aware of the complexities and ongoing workload of SEO and CRO (I work in marketing) and know that it is a specialist role and requires continuous education on the latest Google algorithms, keyword performance and the activity of the competitors in your keyword space. Because I understand this, my first preference would be to outsource to experts - if you don't have (and aren't interested in building) the in-house expertise, then an SEO company is great. However, given that we have in-house marketing, don't want to outsource SEO indefinitely and want to provide relevant PD and up-skilling for our marketing staff, what we want to do is start training someone up in-house to be the specialist rather than being reliant on outsourcing for the rest of our business life.
