The most interesting thing I’ve done this year is pick olives by hand. I spent 8 days in Trapani, Sicily (caught ringworm from a farm kitten but that’s another story) hand picking olives with 9 other people. I spent the days climbing, testing the boundaries of how strong olive branches can be (very strong) and picking olives by hand while having deep, multilingual conversations with strangers that I learned a lot from.
And windsurfing on branches, when I climbed high enough to poke my head out of the canopy and the wind blew ahead of the storm. Olive oil that is fresh out of the mill is a completely different creature on your tongue. I highly recommend it if you have the chance. It’s slow, non tech and hard physical work. The end result is radioactive green olive oil and a lot of memories and dreams collected from others. Everyone talks to each other when we’re all up in one tree.
