Might I gatecrash into this conversation? Here in Mysore we have some wonderful concerts around Ganesha Chathurti (mid-August normally), held in the middle of a small street, shaded by a small shamiana and amplified by large speakers from the 1960s. Organised by a small association of shopkeepers who run their businesses in that area, these are free concerts which have a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere about them. Beginning nearly 40 years ago, the association has managed to bring to Mysore some of the best Carnatic music artistes -- my older friends remember listening to Semmangudi, Mali, DKP, MD Ramanathan and several others here. I have myself heard some stirring concerts by KVN, TVS, MSG and, recently, Sanjay Subrahmanyam at this humble venue.
The very ordinariness of the place -- a small street, blocked off from the little traffic there is, by a simple wooden stage, with a few score rasikas sitting on the 'jamakalams' spread on the road -- creates the atmosphere of a private performance, and seems to have a what I can only call a *calming* effect on the performers. While MSG's music is almost beyond criticism, I have always felt that he played more slowly, with a lot more *nidhaanam* and involvement, here in 8th Cross, Vontikoppal. Last year, the association managed to wrangle marginally larger funds for the event, and for the first time in four decades, there were chairs for the audience. What I'm trying to say, in this involved and complicated way, is -- all you music connoisseurs on silk -- come over! We live half a street away from the venue--there will be hot coffee before the concert, and a simple dinner after, should you decide to drop in.
