Yes, but when one analyses the past with the lens of the present, the past makes lesser sense now than it would have to someone from that time.
Off-topic example from recent history: the word "pirate" has been abused so much that today a pirate is (a) a cutesy eccentric character who sings "yo ho ho" and swings from sail masts, and (b) anyone who listens to music except oneself.
